In 1964, Fannie Lou Hamer and representatives of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party crashed the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City. Ms. Hamer was not welcomed by Democrats. However, she persevered and broke through the door. As a result of that action, and others, Southern Dixiecrats left the Democratic Party and became Republicans.
